Graduate students in certain Ph.D. programs may participate in a Designated Emphasis, a specialization that might include a new method of inquiry or an important field of application which is related to two or more existing Ph.D. programs. The curriculum of the designated emphasis is offered by faculty organized in the manner of a graduate group. The Designated Emphasis is awarded in conjunction with the Ph.D. degree and is signified by a transcript designation; for example, "Ph.D. in Animal Biology with a Designated Emphasis in Reproductive Biology." The Animal Biology Graduate Group is a participating member in the Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology (DEB), Computational Social Science, Host Microbe-Interaction and the Designated Emphasis in Reproductive Biology (DERB).
Designated Emphasis in Computational Social Science
- A Designated Emphasis (DE) is an area of specialization that maps near the edges and overlaps with the traditional disciplinary boundaries that define existing Ph.D. programs. The curriculum of a DE focuses on emerging fields, methods and technologies that are interdisciplinary in nature and, by definition, are relevant to more than one doctoral program.
